About the Smart Alex Puzzle:

The inventor of the "Smart Alex" puzzle is Alex Pop, a Romanian metalsmith who lived in Bothell. He created the puzzle while he was a political prisoner in Romania, working out the design in his head over a period of 16 months. The puzzle was patented by Dumitru A.
